ABOUT

The Write Club Leamington Spa aims to provide a supportive community and structured tasks to help nurture your writing talent.

Each two-hour session is centred on in-depth writing workshops, modelled on the system developed at universities in the US and UK for MFAs and MAs in Creative Writing.  Each writer receives detailed feedback from others on work of up to 3,000 words, submitted a week in advance. In addition, over the 12 week-term we will:

  • Discuss writing techniques with examples drawn from published fiction and the work of experts in the field, and apply lessons to our own writing

  • Take part in Q&As with local published authors. Past visitors have included Elizabeth Lee (CUNNING WOMEN, Penguin, 2021), Jason Cobley (A HUNDRED YEARS TO ARRAS, Unbound, 2021), Paul Greenlees (JOURNEY TO PARADISE, Penguin, 2021), Caroline Lea (PRIZE WOMEN, Penguin, 2023), Fran Hill (CUCKOO IN THE NEST, Legend Press, 2023), and Anthony Ferner (SMALL WARS IN SPAIN, Fairlight, 2024).

  • At the first session you’ll have a chance to meet fellow members in an informal atmosphere and chat about what you hope to achieve over the course of the term. You will also sign up your first workshop session.

THE GROUP CONVENOR

Patrick Kincaid

Patrick is a veteran of the Oddfellows Writing Group, the Write Club's immediate predecessor. That group supported him through the writing of what became his debut novel.

The Continuity Girl, published by Unbound in 2018, was described by Jonathan Coe (The Rotter's Club, Mr Wilder & Me) as "a wistfully entertaining romantic comedy spanning forty years of social and cinematic history, which offers a hommage to one of Billy Wilder’s greatest films and does it proud".

Patrick took part in the Kenilworth Arts Festival in 2018, sitting on a panel with fellow Midlands writers Harriet Cummings (The Last of Us) and Mike Gayle (All the Lonely People).

In 2021, Patrick earned a distinction in the MA in Writing at Warwick University. Since 2022 he has helped deliver Stratford Literary Festival's outreach programme Workshops for Prisoners in prisons throughout England. He works as an editor and proofreader, and as a part-time teacher.
